Spain's electricity network operator, Red Eléctrica Española, announced on Tuesday morning that it has successfully restored electricity to nearly 90 percent of the mainland territory of the country, following a widespread blackout that affected large areas of the Iberian Peninsula.
The company reported that by 4 a.m. local time (02:00 GMT), power had been restored to 87.37 percent, while the percentage was much lower in the early hours of the crisis.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced late Monday night that authorities had managed to restore about 50 percent of electricity supplies. Sánchez wrote on his account on the platform X (formerly Twitter): "I returned tonight to the headquarters of Red Eléctrica.. It will be a long night. We are working tirelessly to restore electricity. Thank you to all the dedicated workers who are bringing life back to normal."
In another tweet, Sánchez clarified that "nearly 50 percent of national supplies have been restored," emphasizing that all state resources have been mobilized to ensure that electricity returns as quickly as possible, and stressing that work is being conducted "with professionalism and commitment, as Spain always does in such circumstances."
In his second press conference in less than 24 hours, held 11 hours after the outage began, the Spanish Prime Minister confirmed that his government "does not rule out any hypothesis" regarding the reasons for the widespread incident, noting that authorities "are analyzing all possible causes, without ruling out any possibility or hypothesis."
According to available information, the outage began on Monday afternoon at 12:33 local time (10:33 GMT), causing chaos that affected millions of citizens and essential services across the Iberian Peninsula.
