A recent recommendation to eliminate home mail delivery service in Canada has sparked a new wave of concern among citizens and advocates for the rights of the elderly and individuals with disabilities, amid warnings of negative social repercussions from this trend.

A report from a federal parliamentary committee has revived a previous recommendation to end the "door-to-door" service and replace it with community mailboxes, as part of reforms aimed at reducing the financial deficit facing Canada Post.

However, this step has been described as "not good" by several MPs and civil society representatives, who emphasized that the measure will negatively affect vulnerable groups that heavily rely on this service, especially in harsh weather conditions and areas lacking accessible transportation.

For its part, Canada Post defended the need to reconsider the postal service model, pointing to significant changes in consumer habits and a major decline in traditional paper mail versus the increase in parcels and email.

This recommendation comes at a time when the Canadian government is striving to achieve a balance between maintaining public services and controlling spending, reigniting the debate over the future of traditional mail in the country.

While no final decisions have been made yet, opposing voices within and outside parliament affirm that any change must take into account human aspects and ensure that vulnerable groups are not left without support.
