In the context of the campaign for the by-elections in Ontario, Progressive Conservative candidates are facing criticism for their absence from public debates in key ridings. The party's candidate in the Scarborough-Guildwood riding, Gary Crawford, refused to participate in a debate organized by the West Scarborough Residents Association, despite repeated calls to attend. The party's candidate in the Kanata-Carleton riding, Shawn Chen, also declined to participate in a debate organized by the Kanata North Chamber of Commerce.

Criticism from Competitors

This absence has prompted strong reactions from candidates of competing parties, who believe that avoiding debates diminishes transparency and prevents voters from gaining a clear insight into the governing party's plans and policies. Liberal candidate Ann Sussman in Kanata-Carleton stated, “Debates are a crucial opportunity for voters to find out who is actually running their campaigns,” considering that the absence of the Conservative candidate sends the wrong message to voters.

For his part, Tariq Qureshi, the candidate for the New Democratic Party in Scarborough-Guildwood, expressed his dismay at Crawford's absence from the debate, pointing out that voters deserve a chance to interact with all candidates before making their decision.

Repeated Approach from Governing Parties

Despite the criticism, political experts believe that the refusal of candidates from the governing party to participate in debates is not a new phenomenon. Candidates representing governing parties often avoid public debates to minimize potential risks that could arise from any unmeasured statements or direct confrontations with competitors. Conversely, some analysts view that avoiding these events could negatively impact the candidates, as it gives their opponents the opportunity for media exposure and direct communication with voters.

Crucial By-Elections

The by-elections are scheduled for July 27, and these ridings are of particular importance to the governing party. The Progressive Conservatives, led by Doug Ford, are seeking to strengthen their presence in urban areas like Toronto and Ottawa, especially following the resignations of the former representatives in these ridings, making this election a test of the party's popularity and policies in Ontario.

With some candidates from the party absent from the debates, the question remains open regarding the impact of this decision on voter choices, and whether it will affect the party's chances of retaining these parliamentary seats.
