The Canadian provincial prime ministers and Finance Minister Dominique Leblanc held meetings with White House officials in Washington to discuss ongoing threats of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump. Participants described these conversations as “constructive,” expressing hope for solutions that would ease trade tensions between the two countries.

These meetings come amid threats from the Trump administration to impose tariffs of up to 25% on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, raising concerns about the outbreak of a trade war that could negatively impact both the Canadian and American economies.

Prime ministers expressed their concern about the impact of these tariffs on Canadian industries, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong trade relations with the United States. They noted that these discussions represent a positive step toward achieving mutual understanding and practical solutions to existing issues.

For his part, Finance Minister Dominique Leblanc reaffirmed the Canadian government's commitment to protecting its economic interests, indicating that Canada would take strong action in response to any unfair tariffs imposed on it.

It is worth mentioning that these meetings are part of Canada's intensive diplomatic efforts to avoid escalating the trade dispute with the United States and to maintain stability in economic relations between the two countries.
