Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a high-level meeting with the premiers of the provinces and territories in the capital Ottawa to discuss the federal government's plan to support strategic projects that he described as "essential for nation-building," which include housing, infrastructure, clean energy, and public transport.

This meeting is the first of its kind since Carney took office, and it comes at a time when Canada faces increasing economic challenges, including slowing growth, rising living costs, and a worsening housing crisis.

Priority for cooperation among government levels

During the meeting, Carney emphasized that "the success of these projects requires a genuine partnership with the provincial governments," adding: "We are not just building roads and homes; we are rebuilding trust and social cohesion in the country."

The meeting focused on how to expedite the completion of stalled projects and overcome bureaucratic hurdles, amid calls from some local leaders for more flexibility in the use of federal funding.

Divergent positions and thorny issues

While some provinces expressed their full support for the new collaborative approach, others warned of concerns regarding centralized conditions on funding, especially in the areas of energy and infrastructure, where provincial priorities vary based on their economic and geographical needs.

The meeting also discussed ways to address the increasing challenges in housing, labor shortages, and climate change, where Carney stressed the importance of investing in "projects that link economic growth with social justice."

A step towards national consensus?

Although no specific agreements were announced after the meeting, observers expressed optimism that the meeting represents the beginning of a new approach in federal relations, especially given the current government's focus on "national unity through joint action," according to the Prime Minister's statement.
