The elected Canadian Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party, Mark Carney, confirmed that his government will firmly defend Canada's interests against the threats posed by U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing that the traditional relationship between the two countries has ended, and that Canada is moving toward building an independent path in its policies and international relations.
Carney stated in a speech he delivered to his supporters in Ottawa following the initial estimates of the Liberal Party's victory in the legislative elections:
“The challenges ahead of us are enormous, and that is natural because major changes always evoke concern, but I have confidence in you and in Canada’s future. We have overcome the shock of American betrayal, and we will continue to defend our interests and take care of one another.”
Carney confirmed that his government will take ambitious positions to confront Trump’s policies, noting that the priorities of the new government will focus on building millions of housing units, transforming Canada into a global power in energy, in addition to unifying the Canadian economy which suffers from regional disparities.
Carney, who is 60 years old, emphasized three core values that will guide his government in the upcoming phase: humility, ambition, and unity, pointing out that these values “will enable us to stand firm against any external pressures, including the threats from the U.S. President.”
Liberals Win New Term
According to preliminary estimates published by several Canadian media outlets, the Liberal Party received more than 50% of the voters’ support, compared to 43% for the Conservative Party, placing Carney at the head of a new government that may be a minority, pending confirmation of the official results from the electoral commission.
CBC and CTV News predicted that the Liberals will form the next government, while it remains unclear whether they will be able to secure an absolute majority in the House of Commons.
Trump Renew Calls for Canada’s Annexation
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his controversial call for the annexation of Canada to the United States, considering that Canadians could achieve an “economic and military resurgence” if Canada became “the fifty-first state.”
Trump stated in a post on the “Truth Social” platform:
“Good luck to the great people of Canada... You can cut taxes in half, increase your military power for free, and quadruple your industries, without tariffs or taxes, if Canada becomes part of us.”
Recently, Trump threatened to impose an additional 25% tariff on Canadian cars, in a move described as part of an economic pressure strategy to subdue Ottawa.
Decisive Canadian Responses
In response to Trump’s statements, Carney wrote on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter):
“We are in Canada, and we are the ones who decide what happens here.”
For his part, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre sent a similar message to Trump, stating:
“Don’t interfere in our elections. Canada will always remain proud, sovereign, and independent — and will never become the fifty-first state.”
It is worth noting that the Canadian economy had begun to recover slowly before the recent U.S. tariffs intensified pressures on local markets, making trade and economic policies with Washington a central focus in the recent election campaign.
