Ontario County Police were busy Saturday morning issuing tickets to distracted drivers who allegedly used their phones to film a serious accident on Highway 401 in Eastern Ontario.

The police said they responded to a collision between a transport truck and an overturned oil tanker in the eastbound lane of Highway 401 near Shannonville Road, between Belleville and Napanee, at around 1:20 AM, while emergency services attended the scene.

Ontario County Police stated that 18 drivers were fined for video recording the accident site while operating their vehicles.

The Ontario County Police said that two of the fines were imposed on transport truck drivers.

The police mentioned that paying attention while driving helps maintain the safety of emergency workers at these scenes.

The eastbound Highway 401 was also closed for nearly 12 hours. All lanes were reopened at 1:40 PM on Saturday.

Ontario County Police also warn drivers about the dangers and consequences of distracted driving.

Ottawa police also charged a driver last Friday during a RIDE check after it was reported that he was watching TikTok on his phone while driving.

The police said all drivers faced a fine of $615, three penalty points, and a three-day driving suspension upon conviction.
