The Toronto police are investigating a jewelry theft incident using a "smash and grab" method that occurred at the Golden Mile shopping center in the Scarborough area.

The incident took place at the shopping center located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Eglinton Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue.

The Toronto police stated that they responded to reports at the scene shortly after 3:30 PM, following multiple reports of suspects using hammers to smash the glass of a jewelry store.

The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle in an unknown direction.

A man who manages a neighboring store in the mall told “CTV News Toronto” that he heard banging and glass breaking during the theft.

He noted that he saw the suspects running while security and some civilians tried to chase them.

He added: “It's frustrating and scary; innocent people feel terrified because they don’t want to witness such events.”

He also mentioned that he noticed what appeared to be a fake firearm, along with at least two hammers.

Other witnesses reported that three suspects smashed the glass of the “Daniel Jewellery” kiosk located in the hallway across from the dollar store in the mall.

The amount of stolen goods has not been determined yet, nor has any injuries been confirmed.

The mall remains open as the police continue their investigations.
