The number of signatories on a petition demanding the Canadian government revoke billionaire Elon Musk's citizenship has exceeded 250,000, accusing him of seeking to "erase" Canada's sovereignty, according to the text of the petition that launched on February 20th.

Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa before immigrating to Canada and obtaining citizenship through his mother, May Musk, who hails from Saskatchewan. The petition, which has garnered widespread attention, accuses Musk of engaging in activities that “contradict Canada's national interest,” pointing out that as a U.S. citizen and former advisor to President Donald Trump, he is considered “a member of a foreign government seeking to undermine Canadian sovereignty.”

In a move that sparked controversy, Musk posted a sarcastic message on his platform “X” on Monday, only to delete it later, claiming that “Canada is not a real country.”

Widespread Political Reactions

In a comment on the petition, Canadian MP Charlie Angus, one of its contributors, stated that this move allows Canadians to “express their justified anger towards the growing influence of oligarchs and extremists.” Angus, who belongs to the left-leaning New Democratic Party, added that “people like Elon Musk pose a threat to our country.”

Although the Canadian Parliament receives such petitions, it is not obligated to take action to implement their demands. Parliament is expected to resume its sessions on March 24, following the end of its current suspension period.

Can Musk's Canadian Citizenship Be Revoked?

According to Canadian laws, citizenship can be revoked if fraud or false information is proven in the immigration application, or if the individual joins a foreign military fighting against Canada. However, there are currently no official indications that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government will take legal action against Musk.

It is noted that Musk has consistently shown support for Trump, who has previously attacked Canada's sovereignty and ridiculed its leaders, even calling for its annexation as a U.S. state, which adds to the controversy surrounding the famous billionaire's stance on his first country of immigration.
