In a prominent statement, Mexico's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, called on the U.S. administration to change its approach to dealing with migrants, emphasizing that "human dignity should not be treated as a crime."
Sheinbaum added during a press conference this morning: "We demand that the United States stop treating migrants, especially those coming from Latin America, as if they are criminals. These are human beings seeking better life opportunities, not a security threat."
This statement comes after media reports discussed the rise of arbitrary detention and deportation of undocumented migrants at the southern border of the United States, triggering a wave of criticism from human rights organizations in Mexico and the region.
This message marks Sheinbaum's first strong stance on U.S. immigration policies since taking office as the first president in Mexico's history, at a time when she aims to enhance cooperation with Washington on migration and development issues, but without abandoning the defense of the rights of Mexicans and migrants in the region.
