Firefighters had to rescue several people from a fire that damaged two buildings and displaced tenants in downtown Moncton last Sunday.

According to platoon leader Brian MacDonald, the city’s fire department responded to the corner of Cameron and Dover streets shortly after 2 a.m. and found two large homes on fire, with people trapped on the second and third floors.

MacDonald confirmed in an interview, “Firefighters immediately raised the ladders to rescue the trapped civilians.”

He added that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and NB ambulance were also on the scene, and everyone was safely rescued and treated by paramedics. He could not comment on the conditions of those rescued.

According to platoon leader Brian MacDonald, one of the buildings was partially vacant and the other had been converted into several smaller apartments.

The fire spread through the attics of both homes, causing significant damage. It took two hours to bring the fire under control.

MacDonald explained, “It was a difficult fire, a very difficult fire to fight.” “Firefighters did hard work to extinguish the flames. It is very challenging to combat fires in these old homes.”

MacDonald stated that one of the homes was partially vacant and the other had been converted into several smaller apartments and was fully occupied. He did not know the exact number of displaced tenants.

The cause of the fire, which damaged two homes and displaced many tenants in Moncton last Sunday, is still under investigation.

The Red Cross was also on-site to assist the displaced tenants.
