The office of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated on Wednesday that Turkey will continue to support the Palestinian cause and push the international community to increase pressure on Israel.
The Erdoğan office added in a post on X that the two leaders discussed recent developments and the steps that need to be taken for a permanent ceasefire and peace in Gaza.
The statement added that Erdoğan condemned Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza, accusing some Western countries of silence and continuing to support Israel.
Erdoğan also told Abbas that all countries, especially in the Islamic world, should intensify their efforts to ensure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinians without interruption.
Abbas is scheduled to deliver a speech at a special session of the Turkish parliament today, Thursday.
The war in Gaza began after the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of 251 hostages in Gaza. Israel launched a wide-ranging war on the Palestinian territory, leading to the deaths of nearly 40,000 Palestinians, most of whom were children and women, and the destruction of 80% of the infrastructure in the region.
Turkey condemned the war and halted all trade with Israel. It filed a request to join South Africa's case in the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide.
Erdoğan told members of the ruling Justice and Development Party on Wednesday before meeting his Palestinian counterpart: "We will show that Mr. Abbas has the right to speak in our parliament just as Netanyahu has the right to speak in the U.S. Congress."
Erdoğan, who has been a strong supporter of Hamas, stated that Turkey was also planning to invite Hamas's political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran.
