The police have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting east of Calgary last week, and say a second suspect is wanted for murder.
Mounties have been searching for suspects since the shooting of two people, one of whom was killed, at a rural intersection in Rocky View County on August 6.
The shooting led to an emergency alert for residents near Strathmore as officers searched the area for two “armed and dangerous” perpetrators.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested 35-year-old Arthur Wayne Penner, a resident of Edmonton, with the assistance of Edmonton police.
He remains in custody and has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Mounties said a second suspect has been identified and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have obtained a warrant for the arrest of 28-year-old Elijah Blake Strawberry, who is wanted for murder.
Sergeant Mark Wilgosh, the head of the Strathmore RCMP detachment, said, “I would like to ask him to surrender peacefully to the nearest law enforcement agency. I can tell you there are extensive measures in place to try to find you.”
He added, “No stone has been left unturned, we are trying to be thorough, we want to make sure we gather as much evidence as possible to piece together exactly what happened and that we can provide more answers, and most importantly for the affected families and the residents of Alberta.
We hope that we can come to a swift and peaceful resolution to this matter where no one else gets hurt.”
The suspect is described as a light-skinned man, 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 169 pounds, with brown hair and multiple tattoos on his arms and face. He is considered armed and dangerous and anyone who sees him is advised to call 911.
The police are also looking to identify the occupants of a black Volkswagen Jetta who may have witnessed the incident. Investigators are asking those individuals to come forward.
Investigators also believe that a stolen SUV reported shortly after 1:30 PM on August 7 in Wheatland County may be connected to the investigation. Members of the public are asked to check dashboard camera footage and surveillance cameras to see if they have seen the SUV or its occupants.
Brown said, “This is unprecedented, this is not something we usually see with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta. This is not normal.”
