The Hamilton police are investigating a murder inside a residential building but are not looking for any suspects.
The police responded to the building located on Ottawa Street near Main Street on Thursday afternoon after neighbors expressed concern that one of the occupants of a unit had not been seen for several days and did not answer their door, according to Sergeant Investigator Jason Cattell, who spoke to reporters on Friday.
Cattell said firefighters had to force their way into the apartment, which was fortified from the inside.
Once they were able to access the unit, they found two deceased individuals inside. The death of one of them has since been ruled a homicide.
Cattell added, "There was no one else inside the unit. The backdoor of the unit was also fortified. So no one could get in or out of this unit at that time without forced entry." "At this time, the death was confined to that unit."
Cattell did not comment on the nature of the relationship, if any, between the two individuals found inside the apartment.
He stated that the police are not commenting on the cause of death at this time.
He continued, "We are not looking for any suspects at this time. We have two deceased individuals in the unit. I will not go into any details without an autopsy being conducted."
Meanwhile, while the police await the results of the autopsy being conducted today, Cattell said investigators are canvassing the area for surveillance footage.
He added that the police also plan to execute a search warrant on another unit in the building that they believe one of the deceased may have been living in.
