Former Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy praised the approach of Mark Carney, leader of the New Liberal Party, in his first overseas trips, considering it relies on "soft power" in building international relations, which he sees as a completely different approach from the policy of U.S. President Donald Trump.
In his statements, Axworthy clarified that Carney seeks to enhance Canada’s image on the international stage through diplomatic dialogue and openness to strategic partnerships, rather than resorting to economic or political pressure. He pointed out that Carney focuses on building trust and enhancing cooperation with allies, in an attempt to reestablish Canada’s position as an influential diplomatic power.
Axworthy added that Carney's style in dealing with international issues is based on a calmer and more collaborative approach, which reflects a fundamental difference from the confrontational approach adopted by Trump.
These statements come at a time when Carney is trying to outline his foreign policy amidst complex international challenges, notably trade, environmental, and security tensions.
