The Canadian House of Commons, on Monday evening, approved a new bill aimed at accelerating the completion of major national projects, supported jointly by the Liberal and Conservative parties, in a rare step of bipartisan agreement on strategic economic issues.
The bill entails reducing bureaucratic barriers and shortening the time required for governmental approvals on infrastructure projects, including pipelines, energy facilities, and national transportation corridors. It also includes mechanisms to expedite environmental permit processes without eliminating fundamental regulatory controls.
Despite initial objections from some members of the New Democratic Party and the Green Party who expressed environmental concerns, the government confirmed that the law includes clear standards for environmental protection and consultation with indigenous peoples.
Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the law "lays the foundation for a more competitive economy," while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre described it as "a victory for logic and national investment."
