In a historic moment, King Charles III delivered his first throne speech on Monday in front of the Canadian Parliament, during the opening of the new parliamentary session, reaffirming the government's commitment to addressing economic challenges and enhancing national unity amid volatile international conditions.
The speech, delivered in the Senate in the presence of high-ranking Canadian officials, including the Governor General and the Prime Minister, outlined the government's upcoming agenda. It focused on supporting the middle class, investing in innovation and infrastructure, and strengthening measures to combat climate change, while emphasizing Canada's commitment to the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The speech also highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships with Indigenous peoples and making tangible progress on reconciliation and social justice issues.
This marks the first time King Charles has delivered the throne speech in Canada, reflecting the continuation of British constitutional traditions in the country and reinforcing the deep historical relationship between Canada and the British monarchy, despite ongoing discussions about the role of the Crown in Canadian political life.
