Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney participated today, Wednesday, in his first accountability session in the House of Commons since taking office, presenting himself as a leader of a “new government” striving to regain the trust of Canadians, and he pledged to focus on pressing economic and social issues.
In a direct confrontation with opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, Carney defended his vision for the next phase, emphasizing that his government would adopt a “different approach” from its predecessor, focusing on easing the cost of living, stimulating economic growth, and addressing the housing crisis and climate change.
Carney said under the Parliament dome: “This is a new government that listens to Canadians, works for them, and will provide practical and actionable solutions to their daily problems.”
The session witnessed a sharp exchange between the Prime Minister and the Conservative leader, who accused the Liberal government of undermining the economy and widening the financial deficit, calling for immediate measures to cut taxes and improve purchasing power. Carney responded by affirming that his government would expedite the passage of the income tax reduction law and provide direct support to middle-class and affected groups.
Carney's appearance at the parliamentary question session is a significant political moment to cement his image as an executive leader, after his transition from the world of finance and banking to political life, at a time when the Liberal Party faces significant challenges to regain its popularity ahead of the upcoming elections.
