Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that there is “more work to be done” after his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. These statements came following talks that addressed trade relations between Canada and the United States, amidst tensions regarding tariffs and a review of bilateral trade agreements.
Carney noted that the meeting was “frank and constructive” despite differences on some issues. He said, “We talked openly about the contentious issues, but there is still more work to ensure the protection of Canadian national interests amidst current challenges.”
For his part, Trump reiterated his position against trade concessions that could harm U.S. industry, while emphasizing the importance of “maintaining good relations” with Canada.
The meeting focused on discussing U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian products, as well as exploring ways to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries without infringing on Canada's economic sovereignty.
