Ottawa – Arab Canada News
Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader, Mark Carney, announced the suspension of his federal election campaign for the third time following the recent escalation in the trade war led by U.S. President Donald Trump, confirming that he will return to Ottawa for an emergency meeting with the Cabinet and senior national security officials.
This development comes after Trump's decision to suspend the "reciprocal" tariffs of 10% for 90 days on certain countries, excluding Canada, which remains subject to three sets of U.S. tariffs affecting the automotive, steel, and aluminum sectors.
In an official statement, Carney described Trump's decision as a "welcome reprieve for the global economy," but warned that the negative impacts of current tariffs and the threat of further escalation are beginning to cast shadows over both the Canadian and global economies.
Carney confirmed that new negotiations with the U.S. president will commence immediately after the upcoming federal elections, aiming to rebuild the economic and security relationship between the two countries, emphasizing that Canada "will not compromise on the rights of its workers or its economic sovereignty."
He also revealed ongoing consultations with international partners, including the European Union, which in turn announced the suspension of counter-tariffs for 90 days pending the results of negotiations.
The trade war is expected to remain a major focus in the Canadian election campaign, as party leaders compete to present their visions for addressing the growing economic repercussions.
