Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced his agreement to organize the pace of communications between Canada and China, in a move aimed at improving the bilateral relations that have been tense for years. This progress came after a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum summit, where both sides discussed ways to enhance dialogue and cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
Carney stated that “the agreement on regular communication does not mean overlooking differences, but it is a framework for addressing them constructively,” emphasizing the importance of “stability and mutual respect” in Canada’s international relations. He also reaffirmed his commitment to defending Canadian values in human rights and the rule of law, especially regarding Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
This step comes amid cautious efforts from both sides to rebuild trust after years of political and diplomatic tension, particularly following the arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer in Canada in 2018 and the detention of Canadian citizens in China.
Observers believe that organizing communication channels could pave the way for more economic openness and dialogue in areas of trade, climate, and regional security, while keeping the door open for candid discussions on unresolved disputes.
