Ottawa – Arab Canada News
The Canadian government expressed its welcome on Tuesday evening for the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, following days of unprecedented military escalation that included airstrikes and drone attacks targeting strategic sites in both countries.
An official statement issued by the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said:
“Canada welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. With the reported decline in Iranian nuclear capabilities, we urge all parties to commit to de-escalation and return to the negotiating table to reach a diplomatic solution.”
The Canadian government emphasized that any political settlement should lead to a broader reduction of tensions in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli military operations have continued for months amidst a catastrophic deterioration in humanitarian conditions.
The statement stressed that Canada “continues to coordinate closely with its allies to support stability and the safety of civilians throughout the region.”
This position comes after official sources in both Tel Aviv and Tehran announced that the ceasefire came into effect early Tuesday, following international mediation involving major powers, including the United States and Qatar, amid cautious international approval and concerns about renewed clashes in case of a collapse of the agreement.
