Eight individuals have been charged in relation to a multi-jurisdictional investigation into car thefts in the Greater Toronto Area.
Investigators say the arrests occurred after several incidents on January 21 and 22.
According to the police, four of the suspects attended two residences in the Peel area within hours of each other on January 21, broke their way in, demanded the vehicle keys, and left with a BMW X5 and a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon.
The next day, four suspects allegedly drove a stolen Mercedes to a home in Toronto, confronted the owner, demanded the keys to two Aston Martins, and then fled the scene.
Investigators say members of the Provincial Carjacking Joint Task Force (PCJTF) noticed the stolen Mercedes in Toronto meeting another vehicle, and police detained the four occupants of the second vehicle — a Honda CRV.
The Mercedes was then followed to the town of Georgina in York Region, where the original four suspects were detained, a search warrant was executed at that address, and the Mercedes along with documents related to another stolen vehicle were seized.
Additional stolen vehicles were also found in a storage facility in Mississauga.
The eight arrested suspects have been charged with possession of property obtained by crime. One of them also faces additional charges for possession of break-in and entry instruments.
Earlier this week, the PCJTF said it has arrested 89 people and laid hundreds of charges in recent months related to violent car crimes in the Greater Toronto Area.
The task force said 109 vehicles have been recovered and 554 charges laid since September 21.
