Canada is facing a worsening crisis in the shortage of doctors, which affects the quality of healthcare provided to citizens. Recent reports indicate that 14.5% of Canadians are unable to access a family doctor, with varying rates across provinces, reaching over 55% in some northern areas such as Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

Reasons for the Shortage

According to a study published in the journal Family Medicine and Community Health, this shortage is attributed to several factors, most notably the lack of available seats in medical schools and residency programs, the significant administrative burden placed on doctors, as well as inadequate compensation systems and rising clinic operating costs.

Data also shows that provinces such as Quebec and British Columbia report high deficiency rates, with 21.5% and 17.7% respectively. British Columbia has the lowest number of available medical seats relative to its population, providing only 5 seats for every 100,000 residents.

Proposed Solutions

To address this crisis, the study suggests several solutions, including:

• Encouraging Canadian medical graduates and international doctors to choose family medicine as a specialty, by offering financial incentives and improving the work environment.

• Reducing the administrative burdens imposed on current physicians, allowing them to focus more on providing healthcare.

• Increasing the number of seats in medical schools and residency programs, to ensure a larger number of doctors graduate annually.

• Streamlining the accreditation process for international doctors, enabling their quicker integration into the healthcare system.

• Establishing a national framework for collecting data on doctors' needs to better guide health policies.

These solutions come at a time when the demand for healthcare services is increasing, especially with an aging population and rising rates of chronic diseases. Addressing this crisis requires joint cooperation between federal and local governments, health authorities, and educational institutions to ensure the improvement of healthcare quality throughout Canada.
