A number of Democratic members of the U.S. Congress have rejected the idea of billionaire Elon Musk joining the party, amid escalating public disagreements with current Republican President Donald Trump, with warnings that Musk's involvement could represent an "unacceptable political risk."
Representative Greg Casar, chair of the progressive caucus (Democrat from Texas), said that accepting Musk into the party "will drive the working class further away from the Democrats," asserting that portraying Musk as a "villainous billionaire" serves the party's interests and should continue.
Representative Jared Huffman (Democrat from California) described Musk as a "crazy person," adding, "We may agree with him on some issues, but he cannot be embraced."
Meanwhile, Representative Scott Peters succinctly stated, "I don't care about Elon Musk at all... we have real issues."
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (Democrat from New York) said, "Personally, I am not associated with someone who publicly performs a Nazi salute," referring to Musk's previous controversial actions.
George Latimer, the Democratic representative from New York, pointed out that Musk "has extreme anti-establishment ideas," adding, "If he sees everyone in the federal government as corrupt and believes they should be disposed of, I cannot support him."
For his part, Representative Ro Khanna stressed that "Musk must be held accountable for his role in undermining the efficiency of the federal government," emphasizing that "he should not be given any symbolic value within the party."
Representative Richie Torres described Musk as "extremely erratic and unreliable, just like Trump," adding that "what he did in dismantling state apparatus is unforgivable."
In a noteworthy position, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that Musk "has significantly contributed to Trump’s return to the White House," indicating that "the significant financial support directed to Trump was a critical factor in his recent victory."
Representative Jared Moskowitz also affirmed that "Democrats do not need Musk, and if he ends up being a saboteur within the Republican camp, that could work to our advantage."
