U.S. President Donald Trump announced today, Friday, that India and Pakistan have reached a comprehensive agreement for an immediate ceasefire, following a series of intensive talks led by the United States to de-escalate tensions between the two nuclear nations.

Escalating Tensions and Course of Talks

This agreement comes after weeks of military escalation between India and Pakistan, particularly in the disputed Kashmir region, where the area witnessed reciprocal rocket strikes and air raids, resulting in casualties from both sides.

The crisis began with a bloody attack targeting Hindu tourists in the Behlgam area of Indian-administered Kashmir, prompting New Delhi to accuse Pakistan-based armed groups of carrying out the attack. In response, India launched strikes on targets within Pakistani territory. In retaliation, Pakistan launched a large-scale military operation targeting Indian sites.

Details of the Agreement and Reactions

Trump confirmed in a statement via his platform “Truth Social” that the agreement takes effect immediately, describing it as a “wise step” that averts a military disaster in the region.

For his part, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar welcomed the agreement, pointing out that his country has always sought to maintain regional peace without compromising its sovereignty. No official statement has been issued by the Indian government yet, but government sources indicated that New Delhi is ready to commit to the agreement on the condition that the other side complies.

International Welcome and Calls for Dialogue

The ceasefire initiative received widespread international approval, with G7 member countries calling for “immediate de-escalation” and the initiation of a permanent dialogue to ensure stability. China and Saudi Arabia also expressed their readiness to facilitate future talks.

Next Steps to Strengthen Peace

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that India and Pakistan will hold talks at a neutral location to discuss a range of outstanding issues, in a move aimed at enhancing stability in the region and building mutual trust.

Concerns and Challenges

Despite the agreement, challenges remain as observers fear the ceasefire may collapse if mutual accusations continue between the two sides, especially given the deep tensions in the Kashmir region.

This agreement is considered a diplomatic achievement for Washington, but it remains a true test of both countries' ability to adhere to peace. The international community remains watchful of how serious India and Pakistan are in respecting the agreement and moving forward toward a peaceful resolution of outstanding disputes.
