Washington - U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States will stop airstrikes on the Houthis in Yemen after the Houthis informed Washington that they "do not want to fight anymore."

Trump said from the Oval Office, sitting next to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney: "We will respect that, and we will stop the airstrikes." He was referring to the military campaign the United States has been conducting against the Houthis since mid-March in response to the group's attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Israel.

On the other hand, CNN reported on Tuesday that the recent ceasefire agreement came as a result of secret talks held last week between U.S. officials and the Houthi group, with active mediation from Oman.

The network clarified that the U.S. delegation, led by Brett McGurk, the White House senior advisor for Middle East affairs, held a series of meetings with representatives of the Houthis focused on calming tensions in the Red Sea and ensuring the flow of humanitarian assistance to Yemen and Gaza.

According to the report, these talks resulted in preliminary agreements to stop escalation, especially after weeks of exchanges of strikes and maritime attacks between the two sides.

Washington and the Houthis refused to officially comment on the details of the meetings, while Oman praised the "progress made towards de-escalation," reiterating its commitment to facilitate regional dialogue.
