Chrystia Freeland, the former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, announced her intention to run for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada following Justin Trudeau's resignation as party leader. This announcement comes at a time when the Canadian political arena is witnessing an open race to choose a new leader for the Liberal Party, with the upcoming federal elections approaching.
Freeland confirmed in her statement that she aims to provide a new political vision for the party that includes abolishing the carbon tax imposed on consumers and achieving a balance between economic growth and environmental protection. She noted that the time has come to rebuild Canadians' trust in the Liberal Party.
The race for the party leadership is expected to be exciting, as Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is also expected to announce his candidacy. The new party leader will be chosen next March.
It is worth mentioning that Freeland had resigned from her ministerial position last December after disagreements with Trudeau over government policies, which sparked speculation about her intention to run for leadership.
