Canadians are looking to Prime Minister Mark Carney tomorrow, Sunday, to announce the date of the federal elections, expected to take place on April 28 or May 5. This comes amid rising tensions with Washington after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian products.
Carney and his competitor, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, are trying to win the trust of voters by presenting a strong economic vision capable of protecting Canada from U.S. threats. Reports indicate that the major economic challenges include an over-reliance on the U.S. market, stagnant productivity, weak domestic investment, as well as internal trade barriers between provinces.
Carney, who took over the leadership of the Liberal Party from Justin Trudeau just eight days ago, confirmed that his government will work to remove internal trade barriers and expedite approvals for energy projects to boost economic growth. Carney said, "We need to make bold and swift decisions to confront unprecedented challenges."
Although the Conservatives were leading the Liberals by a 20-point margin at the beginning of the year, the latest opinion polls indicate that the gap in favor of Carney is narrowing, reflecting a shift in Canadian political sentiment in the face of the economic crisis.
