These statements came during Carney's meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on the sidelines of the consecration mass of Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican City. During the meeting, Carney stressed the importance of releasing all hostages and called for allowing life-saving humanitarian aid to reach civilians in Gaza.

Carney also met with the Executive Director of the World Food Programme, Cindy McCain, where he reiterated Canada's support for the program and its efforts to provide food aid in Gaza, noting Canada's contribution of 100 million Canadian dollars earlier this year to support the efforts of the United Nations and its trusted partners in delivering food and humanitarian assistance.

For her part, newly appointed Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand criticized Israel for using food shortages as a political tool in its military operations in Gaza, pointing out that the Israeli blockade has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with relief organizations warning that Gaza is on the brink of famine.

These statements come at a time when the Gaza Strip is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis, with reports indicating that more than 52,900 Palestinians have died since the onset of military operations in October 2023, according to local health officials.

Canada, through these positions, reaffirms its commitment to peaceful and diplomatic solutions, and its support for humanitarian relief efforts amidst rising tensions in the region.
