Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed that the G7 countries are facing challenges in reaching a joint statement on the third anniversary of the conflict in Ukraine, amid differing positions among member states, particularly between the United States and its European allies.

Joly explained in press statements that Canada, which is holding the G7 presidency this year, is working in coordination with the other member countries to reach a unified position, but disagreements over certain terms, such as describing the conflict as "Russian aggression," continue to hinder the adoption of the joint statement.

These developments come amid a shift in the United States' stance on the Ukrainian crisis since the return of former President Donald Trump to the White House, where Washington is adopting a more pragmatic approach calling for a swift resolution to the conflict and reducing focus on European security issues.

In this context, the United Nations General Assembly recently witnessed a sharp division over draft resolutions related to the crisis, where the United States pushed for a draft calling for a swift end to the conflict and achieving lasting peace, while the European Union and Ukraine presented another draft calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

Canada, along with several European countries, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a firm stance toward Russia, stressing the necessity of preserving international unity in support of Ukraine. As consultations continue, it remains unclear whether the G7 will be able to overcome its disagreements and arrive at a unified statement in the coming days.
