Ottawa - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today, Tuesday, that his country will impose a 25% tariff on U.S. imports worth CAD 155 billion (about USD 107 billion), in response to the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to impose tariffs on Canadian products.
Trudeau explained, in a statement reported by the American channel "Al-Hurra", that these measures will be implemented in two phases, with the tariffs immediately applied to U.S. goods worth CAD 30 billion, while the tariffs on the remaining products, estimated at CAD 125 billion, will come into effect within 21 days.
The Canadian Prime Minister confirmed that his country will not back down from these measures until the United States abandons its trade actions, noting that the Canadian government is considering taking additional non-tariff measures in coordination with provinces and territories, should Washington continue to impose tariffs on Canadian products.
This escalation comes amid increasing trade tensions between the two countries, warning of economic repercussions that could affect trade relations between Canada and the United States, the main partners in the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA).
