Ottawa - Canadian authorities announced the postponement of the second wave of tariffs on American products, valued at 125 billion Canadian dollars, until next April, in response to the U.S. administration's decision to suspend tariffs on Canadian exports.

In an official statement, the Canadian government explained that this decision was made as part of ongoing coordination with Washington, indicating that it is working with the United States to remove all tariffs imposed on goods between the two countries.

The United States postpones tariffs on Mexico and Canada

This development comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced yesterday, Thursday, the postponement of tariffs on most Mexican goods for four weeks, following a phone call with Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Litman, had previously stated that there is a possibility of postponing tariffs on imports coming from Canada and Mexico by 25% for a month, which expands the scope of the exemption granted to the automotive sector.

Litman pointed out that this postponement could encompass more than half of the total U.S. imports from the two countries, according to the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced the NAFTA agreement.

Implications of the decision

These decisions are viewed as a step aimed at calming trade tensions between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, amid warnings that imposing new tariffs could lead to disruptions in supply chains and impact regional economic growth.

Negotiations between the three parties are expected to continue in the coming weeks, as the involved countries seek to reach a permanent agreement before the postponement period ends in April.
