The Canadian government announced today the imposition of new sanctions against a number of Iranian individuals and entities, accusing them of committing "serious human rights violations."
The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in an official statement that the sanctions target prominent officials in the Iranian government, as well as security and military entities involved in suppressing protests and violating citizens' rights. The ministry confirmed that this step is part of Canada's commitment to confront the "systematic abuses" perpetrated by Tehran against its people.
The statement added that the sanctions include freezing the assets of the targeted individuals and entities within Canadian territory, in addition to imposing travel restrictions to Canada. The government emphasized that these measures aim to increase pressure on the Iranian regime to halt its repressive practices and respect its international obligations in the field of human rights.
These sanctions come in the wake of international reports about the escalation of repression in Iran, including the use of violence against protesters and the imposition of strict restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly.
