London - Buckingham Palace has refused to comment on statements made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to annex Canada to the United States, sparking widespread controversy in political and diplomatic circles.
In a brief response to journalists' inquiries, a spokesperson for the British royal palace said: "This is not something we wish to comment on," indicating the palace's commitment to political neutrality and non-interference in contentious political issues.
These developments come after Trump recently raised the idea of annexing Canada to the United States during a political rally, stating that "many Canadians want their country to become the 51st American state," according to his words. He also pointed out that Canada benefits from American protection without providing suitable compensation, hinting at the possibility of using "economic power" to achieve this goal.
These statements have sparked angry reactions in Canada, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the threats as "real and must be taken seriously," insisting that Canada "will never be part of the United States." He emphasized that his country possesses complete sovereignty and will not submit to any attempts at domination, whether economically or politically.
On the international level, Trump's statements have been met with clear rejection from several countries, with France and Germany labeling them as "an assault on national sovereignty," while the United Kingdom, represented by Buckingham Palace, preferred not to make any official stance.
This crisis comes amid escalating tensions between the United States and Canada, with suggestions from the Trump administration of potentially imposing new tariffs on Canadian exports, adding further complexity to the relationship between the two countries.
