The leader of the Canadian Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, announced that his party is ready to cooperate with the Liberal government to end the escalating trade dispute with the United States, in a move aimed at protecting the Canadian economy and avoiding further damage to vital sectors.
Poilievre stated in remarks made on Friday that his party "will act responsibly" and will prioritize national interest over party divisions, adding, "If we can help the government to end this devastating trade dispute, we will cooperate."
Poilievre's remarks come at a time when economic relations between Ottawa and Washington are experiencing increasing tension, backdroped by the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration on Canadian exports, particularly in the areas of metals, agriculture, and energy. The dispute has negatively impacted both the export and job sectors, deepening concerns about the Canadian economy entering a technical recession.
Poilievre affirmed that his party will continue to pressure the Liberal government to secure a fair agreement that restores stability to the markets and protects Canadian interests, but emphasized that "the time for scoring political points is over," and that "political unity is needed now to face this common challenge."
These statements reflect a shift in the tone of political discourse, as Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares to welcome the U.S. president at the upcoming G7 summit in Alberta, which is expected to see direct discussions on the future of trade relations between the two countries.
