The German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, said on Thursday that his country will continue to provide arms to Israel, while emphasizing that the recognition of a Palestinian state can only occur within the framework of direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.

Wadephul's remarks came during a press conference held in Berlin with Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa'ar, where he clarified that “Berlin sees it as necessary to continue supplying Israel with arms,” adding that any recognition of a Palestinian state at the current time would be “a wrong signal,” in his words.

The German minister confirmed that his country supports reaching a political solution based on negotiations, pointing out that unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state “should only happen after an agreement between both parties.”

He also announced that German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, plans to visit Israel later this year, as part of strengthening bilateral relations.

485 million euros in arms to Israel since October 7

The German Ministry of Economy had revealed, in response to a parliamentary inquiry submitted by the "Left" party, that the German government approved the export of arms and military equipment to Israel with a total value of 485.1 million euros during the period from October 7, 2023, to May 13, 2025.

These exports include military equipment and ammunition, amid rising controversy within Germany regarding military support for Israel amidst increasing criticism of its conduct in the war on the Gaza Strip.

Legal review of arms exports to Israel

Wadephul had stated earlier this June, during an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, that arms exports to Israel are currently undergoing a “thorough review,” to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law in light of the situation in the Gaza Strip.

The minister clarified that the government will decide on any new exports based on the results of this review, adding: “If it is found that the legal conditions are met, we will continue to deliver arms if necessary.”

The German government is facing increasing pressure from political and human rights factions both domestically and abroad, demanding a halt to military support for Israel amid the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
