A woman has been charged in connection with a dog attack at a waterfront playground in Toronto that left a child with life-altering injuries over the weekend.

The incident occurred Saturday morning at Little Norway Park, near Lake Shore West Street and Bathurst Street, in the city’s Harboufront area.

Police said a woman was at the playground with her off-leash dog when a father and his nine-year-old child entered the area.

Police explained that the dog lunged at the child through an open gate, bit him, and pulled him to the ground. The woman and the father tried to persuade the dog to release the child, and eventually the dog did so.

Police said the woman then fled the playground with the dog.

The child was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Sunday they executed a search warrant at a home in the Fort York Boulevard and Bathurst Street area. There, a woman was found and detained, and a dog was seized and handed over to Toronto Animal Services.

Patricia Siaryk, 38, of Toronto, was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm. She also faces charges of failure to muzzle a dangerous dog and allowing a dog to run at large under the municipal bylaw, along with two additional charges under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act.

The charges have not been tested in court. Siaryk is scheduled to appear for the first time at Ontario Court of Justice on Monday.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-1400.
