In a recent statement, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump is “seriously considering” the possibility of Canada joining as a state of the United States. Furey noted that this idea, which was raised during previous meetings between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, could have significant implications for the relationship between the two countries.

For his part, Trump described Canada as the “51st American state,” suggesting that this union would bring economic and security benefits to Canadians, including a tax reduction of more than 60% and enhanced military protection. Trump also proposed that Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky take the position of Prime Minister, despite Gretzky's lack of interest in politics.

In contrast, Trudeau firmly rejected this idea, asserting that Trump's threats to annex Canada “will never happen,” and that Canada will continue to defend its sovereignty and independence. Trump's comments sparked a wave of anger and criticism within Canada, where many viewed them as an attempt to undermine the country and its leadership.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time Trump has raised such ideas; he previously suggested purchasing Greenland from Denmark during his first term in office, which was met with complete rejection by the Danish government.

As these statements and tensions continue, the future of U.S.-Canadian relations remains in a state of anticipation and caution, especially in light of current economic and political challenges.
