Amnesty International has accused the Israeli authorities of continuing to commit what it describes as "genocide" against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the war on October 7, 2023, warning of a worsening humanitarian disaster amid alarming international silence.
In a strongly worded statement issued today, the human rights organization confirmed that what Israel has been doing in Gaza for more than seven months cannot be separated from "policies of collective punishment, forced displacement, and systematic starvation," considering that these actions amount to the most serious crimes under international law, including "genocide."
Amnesty stated that it has documented, through field investigations, testimonies from survivors, and satellite images, repeated targeting of densely populated areas, widespread destruction of vital infrastructure, as well as deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid, which threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians.
The organization urged the International Criminal Court to expedite its investigations and hold accountable the Israeli officials involved, and called on countries supporting Israel, especially in the West, to immediately halt arms exports and pressure to end attacks on civilians.
This escalation in the organization's tone comes after successive UN reports warning of an imminent famine and an unprecedented rise in the number of casualties, amid the continuing Israeli military operations in vast areas of southern and central Gaza, and the mass displacement of families towards areas lacking the most basic necessities of life.
