The prominent American lawyer Jennifer Taub, who was among the figures targeted by former U.S. President Donald Trump, issued warnings to Canada about the unchecked use of artificial intelligence technologies and the growing attacks on freedom of expression and political opposition.

In her remarks during an academic conference on technology and human rights held at the University of Toronto, Taub emphasized that "artificial intelligence cannot be separated from the political environment in which it is used," adding that "the employment of these tools for purposes of censorship, distortion, or silencing opposing voices is a real threat to modern democracies."

Taub, who emerged as a legal analyst and advocate for justice during Trump's presidency, pointed out that what the United States has experienced in recent years "can happen in any country if its institutions are not fortified against the politicization of technology."

She urged the Canadian government to establish a strict legislative framework that ensures transparency and accountability in the use of artificial intelligence tools, especially by government or security bodies, and stressed the importance of protecting journalists and activists from smear campaigns and digital censorship.

Taub's remarks come at a time when global warnings about the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies are increasing, whether for mass surveillance or spreading misinformation, amidst a legislative race among countries to establish ethical and technical controls for this rapidly advancing technology.
