Air Canada announced the extension of its flight cancellations to and from "Israel" until next September, after originally planning to resume them on June 8. This decision came in light of recent developments in the region, as the airline had suspended its flights since last year due to the war in the Gaza Strip.
According to what was published by the newspaper "Israel Hayom" on Tuesday, Air Canada has decided to delay its return to "Israel" until September instead of June.
Background of the decision
Air Canada had halted its flights to Tel Aviv last year after the outbreak of what the media referred to as a "genocidal war" against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which led to a wave of international criticism.
Yemeni missile targets Ben Gurion Airport
In a related context, several international airlines suspended their flights to "Israel" following the launch of a ballistic missile by the Houthis from Yemen near Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv last Sunday.
The Israeli army acknowledged the failure of its defense systems to intercept the missile, attributing the cause to a technical malfunction in the interceptor missile.
Escalating tensions
This escalation comes after "Israel" resumed its military operations in Gaza since March 18, prompting the Houthis to target sites inside "Israel" and ships headed there via the Red Sea, as part of what they described as retaliation for the ongoing "genocidal war".
It is noteworthy that the continued suspension of flights poses an additional challenge to the aviation sector in the region, amid increasing international calls for restraint and avoidance of military escalation.
