York University in Toronto has acknowledged an “unfortunate mistake” after accidentally sending emails to some applicants for graduate programs indicating their acceptance, while they had not actually been accepted.
In an official statement issued on Friday, the university explained that a group of applicants received incorrect acceptance letters due to an “internal technical issue,” noting that the matter was quickly discovered, and corrective messages clarifying the error were sent afterwards.
The university spokesperson said: “We sincerely apologize for the confusion this error has caused, and we understand the disappointment felt by those who received these emails in error. We have taken immediate steps to review our systems and ensure that this incident does not happen again.”
The university did not disclose the number of affected individuals, but it confirmed that all applications underwent a thorough review and that final admission decisions remained unchanged.
A wave of discontent spread on social media following the incident, with some rejected students sharing feelings of frustration after believing, even for a brief moment, that they had successfully passed the acceptance stage.
It is worth noting that York University is among the leading educational institutions in Canada, attracting thousands of applications annually for its programs in various disciplines.
