On February 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of tariffs of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on imports from China, justifying this by the need to curb the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigration, and to address the U.S. trade deficit with these countries.
Trump noted that these measures could cause temporary disruptions, but he emphasized their importance. He also hinted at future tariffs on goods from the European Union, in addition to steel, aluminum, copper, pharmaceuticals, and electronic chips.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged to take immediate countermeasures if these tariffs were implemented. While critics warn that these tariffs could increase consumer costs, Trump remains steadfast in his position, claiming that these policies lead to economic success.
