U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will double the tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada in response to the Ontario government's decision to impose additional fees on electricity exports to the United States.
Trump said in press statements, “If Ontario thinks it can impose tariffs on electricity exported to us, we will respond by doubling the tariffs on steel and aluminum. We will not stand idly by in the face of these unfair actions.”
Trump added that the United States has strong alternatives to meet its energy needs and will not tolerate any move that could affect the competitiveness of American industries.
For its part, the Ontario government has not issued an official comment on Trump's threats, but government officials indicated that the fees on electricity aim to strengthen the financial stability of the province's power grid.
These statements come amid rising trade tensions between the United States and Canada, raising concerns about the outbreak of a new round of trade disputes between the two countries.
