In his final days as Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau sought to pass wide-ranging reforms in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), in an attempt to lay new foundations for improving the performance of the security apparatus and enhancing citizens' trust in its work.

According to a report published by CTV News, Trudeau intensified his efforts in recent days to support a comprehensive reform plan aimed at enhancing transparency, combating institutional racism, and improving police response to community crises. Proposed reforms include restructuring the training system, introducing independent oversight mechanisms, and enhancing diversity within police ranks.

Trudeau emphasized in his statements that these reforms are necessary to ensure that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police operates more effectively and equitably, especially in light of criticisms the institution has faced regarding its handling of issues related to excessive force and discrimination.

Trudeau stated, “It is time for deep reforms in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to ensure that this security institution operates in a manner that earns the trust of all citizens and meets the needs of various Canadian communities.”

Among the proposed changes is an enhancement of training in handling psychological crises, and improving police response in cases involving indigenous populations and minorities. The plan also includes the establishment of an independent oversight body to monitor police performance and ensure accountability in cases of misconduct.

Observers believe that these reforms come as part of Trudeau's attempt to leave a clear political mark at the end of his term, especially with increasing pressure on the government regarding its record on social justice issues.

This move comes as the Liberal Party prepares for a transitional phase under the new leader Mark Carney, where security reforms are expected to be a key part of the party's strategy to rebuild trust with voters in the upcoming elections.
