The City of Toronto has announced that it has laid legal charges against two companies that left a construction site on the road where a 24-year-old cyclist died after being struck by a dump truck last month.

The city reported that Ontario Trucking and Disposal Ltd., the waste disposal company, faces five charges under municipal law, including street obstruction, placing an object on the roadway, and causing dangerous conditions.

It added that the general contractor, Mass Contracting Ltd., faces a charge of causing street obstruction.

The city explained that under the Provincial Offences Act, the maximum penalty that the contractor could face for unlawfully closing a public road is $1,000 if found guilty at trial, and if the defendant chooses to pay the fine out of court, the specified fine for each offence is $200.

The city noted that any charges laid by the Toronto Police will be in addition to the charges outlined in the bylaw.

These charges come after some cycling advocates in Toronto called for safer streets following the cyclist's death, urging the city to increase enforcement of illegally blocked bike lanes.
