On its part, the London police stated that a man was with his family in a downtown park when an unknown man approached them and made "offensive comments" to the man and assaulted him.
The police say that the incident "has been identified as hate-driven," but they did not provide any details on why the man was targeted.
The police said the investigation has been reassigned to a hate crimes officer in the force.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims stated in a post on X that the family was Muslim. The council said, "We feel deep horror and sadness when we learned of this."
The council added, "Over the past year, we have witnessed increasing targeting of more and more Muslim families in despicable attacks in London."
London Mayor Josh Morgan condemned the alleged attack in a post on X. He added, "Islamophobia has no place at all in London or anywhere else.
He said, "We must continue to condemn these incidents and work to ensure everyone feels safe in our city." The police stated that the family was in a park near King and Thames Streets on Saturday around 3:30 PM.
When the unknown man approached the man and his family. The police said the suspect made "offensive comments" towards the man and then assaulted him, adding that the suspect remained in the area for 20 minutes before leaving the park on an electric bike. The police reported that the man suffered minor injuries and did not require medical attention. The identity of the suspect had not been established by Tuesday.
He is described as a white man around 40 years old, wearing a black hat, a black jacket, dark jeans, and light-colored athletic shoes, who was riding a blue e-bike. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the London police at
