Ottawa – The Canadian government has unveiled an ambitious plan aimed at finding $25 billion in savings from federal spending over the next three years, in a move described by some parties as "surprising" given the scale of the targeted cuts.

The President of the Treasury Board, in statements reported by CTV News, said that the aim of this move is to redirect funds to enhance urgent priorities, including affordable housing, infrastructure, and strengthening economic competitiveness.

Officials clarified that the plan will focus on reducing the daily operating costs of government departments and agencies, without compromising the essential services provided to Canadians.

“We are committed to achieving this goal in a responsible manner that balances fiscal prudence with protecting jobs and vital services,” said a government spokesperson.

Although the government has not specified the details of the actions to be taken yet, expectations suggest comprehensive reviews of programs and spending, and possibly a hiring freeze or reassessment of government contracts.

The announcement has triggered mixed reactions, with the opposition warning about the impact of the cuts on public services, while business circles consider that tightening spending has become necessary to ensure financial stability and tackle inflationary pressures.

Ministers are expected to present detailed plans to achieve the required savings before the end of the current summer, with the government starting to implement the gradual measures from the next fiscal year.
