Washington – CBC News reported that U.S. President Donald Trump revealed plans to impose an additional 35% tariff on imports from Canada, in a move that would escalate trade tensions between the two countries.
In statements made Thursday evening to NBC News, he said, "We will impose additional tariffs on Canada reaching 35% starting from the beginning of next month."
Trump considered that Canada has not fulfilled its trade and economic obligations towards the United States, adding:
“We have been patient for a long time, but it's time to take tough measures to ensure fair treatment for American industries and workers.”
According to officials in the U.S. administration, these tariffs are expected to take effect at the beginning of next month and will cover a wide range of Canadian goods, from metals to agricultural products.
The Canadian government has not yet issued an official comment on the decision, while experts anticipate that Ottawa will respond with retaliatory measures or file a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization.
These developments come after weeks of escalating trade disputes between the two countries following Washington's announcement of tariffs on Canadian copper exports and the cancellation of the digital services tax that Ottawa planned to implement.
Analysts described the U.S. action as “one of the biggest challenges to bilateral economic relations since the signing of the new NAFTA agreement,” warning of its implications for supply chains and jobs on both sides of the border.
